Emergencies

The University of Alberta campus is a safe place. Yet, like other communities, we are not immune to crime and must remain constantly aware of our surroundings to ensure our community's safety and security.

In any situation, personal safety is first priority!

**In the case of an emergency (ambulance/fire/police needed immediately) - dial 911**

When you call 911, they will tell you what you need to do over the phone. Please try to stay calm and speak very clearly, and describe your location as best as you can so that the 911 responder can help you to the best of their ability. Once the serious emergency has been addressed, please notify your program coordinator of what happened.

Campus Security

University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS)

For non-emergencies, you can contact the University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS), located at 11390-87 Avenue. They operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and can be reached by telephone at 780-492-5050 to inquire about personal safety, lost and found items, or thefts on campus. They can be thought of as the ‘campus police’, so you may also see members patrolling campus throughout the day!

Tips & Tricks

For your security:

  • Trust your gut feeling – if something doesn’t feel right and you do not feel safe, do not be afraid to seek help or call a friend. Better safe than sorry!

  • Lock your doors and windows whenever you leave your room or residence, even if you will only be gone for a short time.

  • Most household doors in Canada do not automatically lock behind you unless fitted with a mechanism to do so, so you generally must remember to lock them behind you.

  • Try to keep your cell phone with you in case you get locked out so you can ask for help to get back in.

  • Be suspicious of unknown persons loitering in the area of your residence.

  • Never leave an outside door propped open.

  • Never leave valuables such as purses, wallets, laptops, cell phones, cash money, etc. visible in a vehicle unattended, and ask the driver to lock the door when the vehicle is unattended. You can hide these items in a compartment or anywhere out of sight if you are going shopping with a friend and using their vehicle.

Keep a list of your valuables (laptop computers, MP3 players, cell phones, jewelry, passports, etc.), and take pictures of any valuables, ID cards, medications, or hard-to-replace items you have and store them in a personal drive, in case you ever need to replace them or report them as lost/stolen.
