All interns are responsible for finding their own accommodation in Edmonton for the duration of their stay, unless their funding agency has indicated that they will make arrangements for the participants.
These are the monthly estimates for a typical accommodation in Edmonton. Please note that these values are only meant to serve as a loose guideline of how much you can anticipate having to spend on your accommodation.
Shared Accommodation: $500 - $700 per month (most popular)
Bachelor Apartment: $700 - $950 per month
Suites, 1-Bedroom Apartment: $950 - $1,250 per month
It is very important that you start searching for a place to stay before arriving. Most interns arrange at least a short-term accommodation before arriving and then look for longer-term housing once they are here. Many interns even find their long-term accommodations ahead of time. The earlier, the better!
Important Reminders
Many apartments or room-for-rent accommodations are typically available at the beginning or end of the month, but move-in dates can vary significantly. Please make sure you confirm your move-in and move-out dates with your landlord!
Rent is usually charged by the calendar month, and not per day or week. While there are exceptions, especially for student housing, you may need to factor in paying for a few days of the accommodation before your arrival, or paying for the rest of the month if you do not stay for the entire calendar month.
University of Alberta International staff cannot become directly involved in organizing off-campus accommodation for students or interns, though we would be happy to give you advice!
We cannot pay any deposits from your scholarship/award funds in advance, as these funds are issued in your name.
If you need to provide our contact information for a landlord to verify that you are coming to participate in a research internship program, that is okay! They are welcome to email intern@ualberta.ca and we will happily reply on your behalf.
There are many options for accommodations around the city. A good area to look is the surrounding neighbourhoods and communities around campus, like Garneau, McKernan, Belgravia and Strathcona. You can also look at places downtown, since it is very accessible from campus! When looking at the location of the house or apartment, think about its proximity to grocery stores, shops and services, and the type of experiences you would like to have.
Maybe you want a room in a house in a safe, quiet neighbourhood with a half-hour bus ride to campus? Or maybe you want a room in an apartment within walking distance to campus with someone who loves to have friends over late into the night so that you can meet people? Or maybe you'd like to do a homestay with a local family who lives a 15-minute walk away from campus? It's important to consider what kind of accommodation you're looking for, and ask the landlord lots of questions so you can get a good idea of what the house or apartment is like.
If you have questions or requests regarding your specific housing, please send them directly to the property manager or landlord. To avoid delays, please also send any housing/accommodation application forms to the email address as instructed on the application form, not to intern@ualberta.ca.
