All interns are responsible for finding their own accommodation in Edmonton for the duration of their stay, unless their funding agency has indicated that they will make arrangements for the participants.
Price guidelines (monthly estimate) for different types of off-campus accommodations:
**These estimates are meant to serve as a loose guideline of how much you can anticipate having to spend on your accommodation.
1-Bedroom in a Shared Accommodation: $500 - $900 per month (most popular)
This is typically a single family home with 2-5 bedrooms with residents sharing kitchen and common spaces like the living room and backyard
Bachelor Suite/Apartment: $800 - $1,100 per month
1-Bedroom Apartment: $900 - $1,300 per month
2-Bedroom Apartment: $600 - 900 per month per person ($1200 - 1800 total)
3-Bedroom Apartment: $500 - 800 per month per person ($1500 - 2400 total)
It is very important that you start searching for a place to stay before arriving. Most interns arrange at least short-term housing for the first few days before they arrive, and then look for longer-term housing once they are here. Many interns even find their long-term accommodations ahead of time.
Important Reminders
It is very common for apartments or room rentals to be available for people to move in or out at the beginning or end of the month, such as the 1st or 31st. For some accommodations, it is even midway through the month on the 15th. Please confirm this with your landlord and make sure the date listed on your rental agreement is correct
The day and time you move in can be flexible, depending on your landlord
In Canada, rent is usually charged by the calendar month, and not per day or week. While there are exceptions, especially for student housing, you may need to factor in paying for a few extra days when you haven't arrived yet, or for a few days after, if you do not stay for the entire calendar month
University of Alberta ISVS staff cannot be directly involved in organizing off-campus accommodation for interns, though we can offer advice
We cannot pay any deposits ahead of time from your scholarship/award funds, as these funds are issued in your name after your arrival
If you need to provide our contact information for a landlord to verify that you are coming to participate in a research internship program, that’s okay! They are welcome to email intern@ualberta.ca, and we will reply to them if that makes them feel better about renting to you. However, please note that University of Alberta staff cannot legally act as guarantors to help you secure a residence.
There are many options for accommodations around the city. A good area to look is the surrounding neighbourhoods and communities around campus, like Garneau, McKernan, Belgravia, and Strathcona. You can also look at places downtown, since it is very accessible from campus! When looking at the location of the house or apartment, think about its proximity to grocery stores, shops and services, and the type of experiences you would like to have.
Maybe you want a room in a house in a safe, quiet neighbourhood with a half-hour bus ride to campus? Or maybe you want a room in an apartment within walking distance to campus with someone who loves to have friends over late into the night so that you can meet people? Or maybe you'd like to do a homestay with a local family who lives a 15-minute walk away from campus? It's important to consider what kind of accommodation you're looking for, and ask the landlord lots of questions so you can get a good idea of what the house or apartment is like.
If you have questions or requests regarding your specific housing, please send them directly to the property manager or landlord. To avoid delays, please also send any housing/accommodation application forms to the email address as instructed on the application form, not to intern@ualberta.ca.
