At the U of A and in the MD Program, access, community and belonging are prioitized to provide a safe and respectful community for our students, staff, and faculty. You may be familiar with these concepts under another name — equity, diversity and inclusion.
This webpage provides content around some ACB/EDI topics that we encourage you to consider as part of your teaching and treatment of all individuals participating in the MD Program. This content was originally published on a website previously known as the Teachers' Hub.
Mission: To improve the medical education experience for our teachers and learners alike through mutual support.
This is an overview to provide a framework to optimize teaching and learning during the classroom time that maximizes engagement and is pedagogically sound.
The goal of this resource is two-fold. Firstly, it is meant to provide our frontline teachers with the resources and guidelines they need to thoughtfully approach EDI topics in medical education. Secondly, it is meant to provide a framework for creating engaging and pedgogically sound didactic lectures that maximize meaningful engagement.
Why Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)?
Ultimately, cultivating inclusive environments is about improving patient care and supporting a safe working and training environment. It is important to recognize the profound impact that teachers have on learner attitudes and future approaches to practice with vulnerable groups, especially in the early stages of training.
The underlying philosophy of this resource is to dispel the idea that we are all working towards a level of competence as it relates to understanding the lives of our patients and colleagues in favour of a humility framework. This is an evolving resource that is meant to give instructors a baseline of how to address common EDI topics in medical education and crucially how to effectively respond to feedback. The focus has been on creating something practical and specific to medical education while providing a brief context so that we understand, for example, why the use of certain language is encouraged over others.
