Clinical Appointments & Remuneration

Clinical Faculty Appointments

Clinical faculty members are the largest group of teachers in the FoMD at the University of Alberta. Any individual providing clinical teaching to students, residents or fellows in the FoMD is eligible for a Clinical Faculty Appointment. Any physician who is serving as a primary preceptor for medical students in required clerkships must have a Clinical Faculty Appointment to be eligible to teach. Stipends can only be provided to teachers who have an appointment.

The process to obtain a Clinical Faculty Appointment is initiated by a written request to the Chair of the clinical department to which the individual belongs. Each department has established processes and timelines for submission. Consult your department administrator or Chair for more information.

Remuneration

The MD Program provides compensation for non-salaried instructors as described below. Stipends are available for non-salaried physician faculty members or nurse practitioners who teach in the MD Program and who are typically paid fee-for-service out outside of the FoMD.

Who is Eligible for Compensation?

Our governing principle for eligibility is that we wish to provide compensation for clinical teaching or assessment activities that are out of scope.  Therefore, the following are eligible for stipend compensation:

• Fee for Service (FFS), including Special Continuing

• Clinical Alternative Relationship Plan (CARP)

• Blended Capitation Model (BCM)

• Primary Care Physician Compensation Model (PCPCM)

Instructors who are NOT eligible for teaching stipends because teaching and assessment of medical students is in scope of their existing compensation model include:

• Full-Time Academic (FTA) Professors and Section A faculty members (in the Collective Agreement)

• AMHSP members

• Individuals remunerated for teaching activities by another source

• Residents and/or Clinical Fellows who are registered with PGME

To be eligible for a teaching stipend, teachers must have an active, current teaching appointment, as shown on Cally, at the time the teaching was provided. 

What is Eligible for Compensation?

Activities and sessions in pre-clerkship and clerkship may be eligible for remuneration, including:

• Admissions File Review

• MeDMAP mentors

• Small group sessions

• Large group sessions or lectures

• Full class OSCE examiners (e.g. year 1, 2, or 4)

• End of rotation OSCE examiners (e.g. year 3)

These activities and sessions are remunerated at the rate of $125/hour, not including preparation time.

Primary preceptors in Clerkship may also be eligible for remuneration at a rate of $200 per week. Stipend compensation can only apply to a single eligible primary preceptor for students under their direct supervision during any given half day or combination thereof over each five day work week.  

We define the “primary preceptor” as the individual who is duly registered within our program delivery system (Cally)and scheduled as the primary supervisor for a medical student on a core rotation at any given time.  Primary preceptors must have a current appointment with the FoMD and some may be stipend-eligible. Stipend compensation can only apply to a single primary preceptor for students under their direct supervision during any given half day or combination thereof over each five-day work week.  

Compensation Procedures

Eligibility for compensation will be validated first by the course/Clerkship coordinator or administrator and then by the MD Program office. Payments will be arranged by the MD Program office after each course is completed (for Pre-Clerkship teaching) and periodically throughout the year (for Clerkship teaching).
