The ACMDTT is a regulatory body established under the Health Professions Act (HPA) whose primary purpose is the protection of the public. This driving principle is upheld through requirements and procedures established by the College. In addition, the College continues to offer member services that promote and support continuing education, networking opportunities, and professional excellence. The professional groups which are collectively regulated include: radiological technologists, nuclear medicine technologists, magnetic resonance technologists, electroneurophysiology technologists, and radiation therapists.

All students enrolled in the Radiation Therapy program are bound by, and shall comply with the standards, expectations and Professional Codes of Ethics governing the profession and practice of Radiation Therapy, including all ACMDTT standards.

The fundamental responsibility of diagnostic and therapeutic professionals is to manage the prescribed diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients in an effort to improve the patients’ health. Further, members have professional obligations to work collaboratively with colleagues and other health care professionals to advance the art and science of the services the profession as a whole provides.
Professionals of the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists abide by and promote the primary principles for ethical practice as described within the key principles of the Code of Ethics.
ACMDTT Student Membership (Mandatory)
Students of the Radiation Therapy Program at University of Alberta are required to join ACMDTT as student members. Student membership to ACMDTT automatically grants you student membership to CAMRT.
Student membership must be applied for within the first 14 days of commencing the BScRT education program.
Students are required to register their ACMDTT/CAMRT number with the BScRT administrative office within 6 weeks of commencing the education program.
Standards of Practice describe to the public those practices considered essential to the provision of high quality care. Those same Standards, in conjunction with entry-to-practice competency statements, are used by educators to design education programs and practice assessments. Regulated members use the Standards of Practice for self-monitoring processes and to facilitate continued learning initiatives.
ACMDTT Entry-to-Practice Competency Profile
Radiation therapists are responsible for accurately planning and administering the radiation treatment for cancer patients, using radiation treatment units. They have expert knowledge in care of the patient and anatomy, as well as radiation physics and radiation protection for the safe operation of the equipment. The radiation therapist counsels patients on possible side effects from treatment and provides advice on how to minimize and manage them. Because the course of radiation treatment often takes several weeks, a special supportive relationship usually develops between the therapist and the patient and family members.
