A very warm welcome to you!
During your time in the program, you will access courses that cover a background in cancer and radiation biology, interactions of radiation with tissue, cancer treatments, clinical management of patients with cancer, medical physics, radiation safety and protection, gross and cross sectional anatomy, research methodology and principles of imaging as related to radiation therapy practice. Learners will engage in traditional, simulation, and clinical educational environments throughout their learning journey. Program design supports learners’ progression from knowledge and skill acquisition through to competency and clinical reasoning.
The didactic component of the program is comprised of mandatory courses that provide learners with a background in cancer and radiation biology, cancer treatments, care of patients with cancer, interactions of radiation with tissue, medical physics, radiation safety and protection, gross and cross sectional anatomy, treatment planning, research methodology, and principles of imaging as related to radiation therapy practice.
The clinical component consists of both simulation and on-site learning in the clinical cancer care environment with patients. Learners access clinical placements in the Alberta Health Services CancerCare Alberta sites that provide radiation therapy services.
The practice of radiation therapy is interdisciplinary and collaborative, involving a variety of health care professionals, research scientists, clinical practice leaders, and provincial health systems. We have adopted a collaborative educational model and includes many of these professionals in the learners’ experience to ensure a holistic approach to caring for patients with cancer. The Radiation Therapy Program partners with Alberta Health Services CancerCare Alberta to provide a clinical learning experience which promotes the development of competent, critical thinking, and reflective Radiation Therapists who practice in a caring, evidence-based manner.
We have a strong commitment to our patients and our community and we endeavour to foster the development of Radiation Therapists who are committed to excellence in professional practice and embody life-long learning. Future directions for the Radiation Therapy Program include the development of continuing education modules and a Masters degree.
