Acquired as a gift from Emma Read Newton in 1950, Winter Evening, Edmonton is one of ten works by Alban Cartmell in the University of Alberta Museums Art Collection. The painting depicts the Hotel Macdonald (now known as the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald), a highlight of the Edmonton skyline.

Originally from England, Cartmell settled in Edmonton in 1923 where he became known for his paintings of the prairies, the Rocky Mountains, and Vancouver Island. In 1932 and 1955, Cartmell’s paintings were displayed in solo exhibitions at the University of Alberta.
