A Reflection of Time

"Great art also grapples with the fundamental social and political questions of our times, often raising difficult and challenging questions. These pieces from the University of Alberta Museums Art Collection invite us to reflect on some of our troubled histories, including the legacy of residential schools and the eugenics program in Alberta. In doing so, art can inspire change and advance social justice."

- President Bill Flanagan

Art from anywhere around the globe reflects the stories, topics, ideas, and challenges of the generations from which they are created. The University of Alberta Museums Art Collection (UAMAC) contains works of art that tell many important stories and serve as both a record of the times, and can facilitate important conversations about the world we live in. They are often controversial and provocative and link to timely and topical events. Art also highlights the important work and research done at the University of Alberta. These stories are snapshots that allow us to access a particular place in time and help us to understand the importance of art at an academic institution.
