Prolific Japanese print artist Tetsuya Noda is known for his documentary work. His print series “Diary” is composed of over 500 works and spans the last 50 years. In this print, Noda documents the highway into Edmonton on February 28th, 1985. As he drives westbound into the city from the east, long-time Edmontonians will immediately recognize the significant transformation of this section of highway in recent years.

This print combines photo-based screen-printing with an overlay of a traditional woodblock. The result is a sharp contrast between the detailed landscape and a flattened, monotone sky.

Once a visiting artist in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta, Noda is currently professor emeritus from the University of Tokyo. He continues to reside in Japan.
