The mandatory administrative meetings that you will attend include the Geriatric Medicine RPC (every 1-2 months), the Geriatric Medicine Division meeting (every 1-2 months), Joint RPC (twice a year) and the Joint Division Meeting (twice a year). The "joint" meetings include the Geriatric Medicine and Care of the Elderly staff as the 2 divisions work very closely with one another. Reminder emails will come out prior to the meeting.
Amanda will give you a key to the residents’ office in CSB. There are two computers and a Dell laptop and Dell docking station for GM resident use. The office also has quite a few resources, such MKSAP, various Geriatric texts and physical exam books. If there are other resources you feel would be helpful, don’t hesitate to ask.
You also have access to various online resources. Since these require a password, they will be sent via email.
Where possible, please request vacation, conference and personal leaves well in advance of the anticipated absence. Please use email geriatri@ualberta.ca and the program director.
Participation in the teaching of rotating students and residents on clinical rotations is required. The Half Day Teaching EPA applies.
AHD attendance is mandatory. Presentations at academic half-day are approximately 6 times per year. During your Glenrose psychiatry, palliative and LTC rotations, attendance at academic half-day will likely not be possible because of clinical conflicts so your oral presentations should not be organized during those times. In addition, you may not have longitudinal clinics whilst on those rotations.
Completion of 3 reflective exercises by end of year 2. More information is available on the Scholarly Activities & QI Modules page.
Completion of a scholarly project by end of training date. This may involve a quality improvement project. You are expected to meet with Dr. Wagg, the division's research mentor, in your 1st year of training. Most of the work on your research project will be carried out in your 2nd year at times specifically allocated for this. However, an idea for the project and application for ethics approval if required, should be generated in the 1st year of training.
Please bring forward any concerns you may have about your rotation, preceptor, etc. in a timely manner to the program director or other faculty member. If concerns are not brought to the program, we cannot address them.
Please ensure all absences/sick leaves are reported to geriatri@ualberta.ca as well as the rotation preceptor.
