In addition to the site-based clinical teaching, a formal academic half-day is designed for the benefit of all trainees in our program. This occurs every Tuesday afternoon and is accessible via zoom video conferencing. Attendance is tracked and recorded. If you are unable to attend, contact geriatri@ualberta.ca so you are marked "excused" and not "absent" in error.
All AHD sessions are open to rotating residents with preceptor approval. Sessions are via zoom.
Slides are available in our Senior Core Presentations Folder.
Academic half day is the foundation of the Geriatric Medicine academic program and is designed to cover the core curriculum set by the Royal College. It is organized to provide structured educational activities which include Geriatric Grand Rounds, a journal club, clinical skills teaching and presentations, as well as specialized exam prep sessions. The content is presented by residents in the Geriatric Medicine program, in cooperation with the Care of the Elderly program. Staff and invited guests in their expertise area will also be speakers in the AHD sessions.
The AHD curriculum is a two year program held every Tuesday afternoon from 1:15 - 4:15. Geriatric Medicine residents are expected to attend in person. Staff may attend via zoom if they are unable to attend in person.
Topics are grouped into categories and more than one may be covered at one AHD session. Presentations demonstrate an in-depth knowledge on the subject and are evidence-based.
Evaluation: presentations are evaluated by the attending staff and residents present. The results of the evaluation will be provided to the resident and the program director.
Attendance: is mandatory for GM residents.

JAPES sessions run approximately 8 times throughout the year. These are shorter sessions focusing on theories of aging/normal changes of aging, reviewing landmark papers in Geriatrics, ethical scenarios, and a discussion of clinical cases or current Geriatric Medicine topics. These sessions include a GM Royal College exam question review.
In an effort to consolidate learning and prepare GM residents for their Royal College exam, we offer SAQ sessions and quizzes within our AHD. These "SAQ" sessions incorporate the education principles of retrieval practice, feedback and peer instruction which have all been demonstrated to improve learning. The fellows work in pairs to create 2 short-answer questions (SAQs) each. The questions will be based on the previous JAPES AHD session. There will be time within the JAPES AHD session for the fellows to answer the SAQs and to discuss their answers within their pairs. Feedback will then be provided by the pair that created the question and by faculty.
Geriatric Grand Rounds, evidence-based medicine focus and interprofessional health focus, are held alternatively every Tuesday at noon, via zoom. Geriatric Grand Rounds do not run during the summer months.
Geriatrics-News, an announcement list subscription, accessible from the menu, is free and allows you to receive timely your personal copy of announcement, poster and handouts.
Video conference: Advance registration is required to ensure the room booked is not cancelled at the last minute due to absence of registrant for the room. Registrants will be notified in case of room changes.
Self-directed learning is our approach for all residents and postgraduate learners rather than the formal classroom teaching sessions. Each individual is responsible to take the initiative in building up their knowledge base in Geriatrics and acquiring pertinent experience while on the rotation.
