We gratefully acknowledge the support of the organizations and individuals who have established scholarships and awards specifically for students at the University of Alberta Geotechnical Centre. These scholarships are a testament to the vision and commitment to building the next generation of geotechnical engineers.
Students registered in a thesis-based master's program or doctoral program are eligible to hold awards. To be competitive, students should have a grade point average of 3.5/4.0 on the University of Alberta grading scale and be involved in leadership activities on/off campus and/or in the geotechnical professional community.
This endowed scholarship was established by Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd. and is awarded to an outstanding student pursuing graduate research in the field of geotechnical engineering specializing in the geotechnical behaviour or the environmental impact of mine tailings. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of superior academic achievement.

Funded by ConeTec Investigations Ltd., Golder Associates Ltd. and proceeds from the ARCSACC Conference and David C. Sego Symposium, this scholarship recognizes an outstanding student conducting innovative and multidisciplinary research that benefits the engineering profession. Preference will be given to those who conduct research in permafrost or oil sands-related engineering.
Teams of students from the University of Alberta and NAIT have an opportunity to compete in this annual event supported by the Geotechnical Society of Edmonton! The challenge is to put theory into practice by designing and predicting the failure strengths of model reinforced retaining walls that the teams construct on the day of the competition, with no opportunity to undertake trial tests.
In 1989, the Geotechnical Society of Edmonton (GSE) established the GSE Graduate Student Award, which is presently known as N.R. Morgenstern Student Award since 1999. This award is given annually for the best seminar by a graduate student in the Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering Group or for an excellent defence of a thesis in Geotechnical Engineering or Geotechnique. Part-time students are eligible for this award.
The scholarship established by Thurber Engineering is awarded to a student with superior academic achievement registered full-time in any year of a graduate degree program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering whose field of study is Geotechnical Engineering. The selection will be based on academic achievement and the relevance of the research.
