Dr. Joy Ruth Mickelson was a psychologist and social worker in Edmonton for many years. She completed her PhD in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta. While a doctoral student, she was involved with the Centre for Research for Teacher Education and Development and remained involved for many years after completing her PhD. She worked on several Centre research projects, including a large narrative inquiry into the experiences of youth who left school early. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre and later was an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Centre.
Joy Ruth was a poet and a member of the Canadian Authors Association, the Writers Guild of Alberta, and the Stroll of Poets Society. She published two books: the first, Our Sons were Labeled Behavior Disordered, published in 2000, was based on her doctoral dissertation. Her second book, Facing the Shards, was published in 2015. Joy Ruth was a strong supporter of pushing the boundaries of research and worked closely with all members of the Centre to encourage cutting-edge work in narrative inquiry.
