Teach in with Dr. Jim Turk: Freedom of Expression, Public Education, and Demo
Monday, March 23, 2026, 7:00-8:30 pm
Online Webinar (will be recorded)
The Ministerial Order banning books in Alberta schools is the largest book ban in Canadian history and raises grave questions about public education, freedom of expression, and democracy. Join Dr. James Turk, Centre for Freedom of Expression, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), a local educator, Jodi Schwartz, her student, and library science practitioner Karla Palichuk, as they discuss the centrality of freedom of expression for human rights, for equity, for social justice, and for democracy. Dr. Turk will also explore the limits to freedom of expression, the central place of public education and public libraries in realizing democratic aspirations, and the rising threats of censorship and exclusion from public life that are reversing decades of progress toward a more egalitarian, inclusive, and just democratic society.
Mutual Thinking: Gathering III with Dr. Donald
Tuesday, March 31st, 12:30-2:00 PM
An invitation to gather in slow dialogue—where older stories meet new possibilities, and we imagine together how education can help us live well in uncertain times. Join us in reciprocal dialogue to share stories, ask questions, and build compassionate spaces where we learn how to live well, together. Please consider bringing an inquiry for us to thinkabout. This inquiry can take the shape of a story, poem, quote, song, art, a reflection, a memory... that aligns with the intentions of our dialogue.
