Welcome to your Critical Care Rotation at the University of Alberta Hospital!
Please review the below information prior to your rotation.
Orientation:
A Critical Care subspecialty resident will meet you at the GS ICU front desk on the first day of the block at 0730 hrs to introduce you to the unit.
A formal orientation will take place in the large conference room on the unit (3C1.04 WMC) from 1300-1500 hrs on the first day of the block. This will provide orientation to the unit as well as provide an opportunity to practice CVC insertion using gel molds and ultrasound.
Following the first day, the rest of rotation start time is 0700 hrs.
Connect care software access: You should have already gained access. If not, contact your program to ensure this is arranged. All procedures must be logged in Connect Care during your rotation, thus you must have this setup prior to the start.
Mandatory Attendance Required: as part of your rotation in Critical Care Medicine, you are required to attend:
Critical Care Grand Rounds: held every Tuesday (except the 3rd Tuesday of each month) from 1230 - 1330 hrs via Zoom or in 2-193 Clinical Sciences Building. Info regarding Critical Care Grand Rounds are emailed weekly.
Junior Rotating Resident ICU Teaching Seminars: held Tuesday-Friday from 715-745 hrs in room 3C1.04 WMC (large conference room). Topics are posted on the bulletin board to the left of the ICU entrance
Please review the information on the General Rotation Information page.
Call Schedule:
Each resident has a team assignment for this block. When making the call schedule, please try to choose a resident from each of the teams (Red/Blue/Green) to be on call for that day, with no more than 2 residents from one team being on call on the same day. Due to the amount of residents in the block, there isn't even distribution between teams, so there may be some days with 2 residents from the same team on call.
While we understand this model won't be perfect, we are focused on having equitable call distribution between the residents (approximately 7 call per junior resident).
A couple additional guidelines for making the call schedule:
Avoid scheduling two residents in their first month of rotation on call together and try to mix specialties to balance skills. Residents whose names are bolded in the schedule are on their second block of rotation.
Approved leave days are the only days that can be guaranteed not to be on call. If you do not have leave listed on the call schedule then you are not approved for leave. Residents should expect that they could be on call on the night of or the night before their Academic Half/Full Day. There are often many call requests that are difficult to accomodate even without this consideration. Also, all leave requests are to come through our office for approval. If you with to put in a leave request, please send a leave form in to ccmedu@ualberta.ca
All Residents: please ensure your pager number is correct on the schedule so you may always be reached in a timely fashion.
If you are scheduled to work a statutory holiday during this block, you are entitled to take a day in lieu. Please choose a date from this block ensuring that there is coverage for your leave, and submit a Vacation/Leave Request Form (which can be obtained from your home department) to ccmedu@ualberta.ca as soon as the call schedule has been completed. If it is not submitted in a timely fashion, it may not be possible to grant leave on the requested date.
If you have someone covering your call while you are at your Academic Half/Full day, please give them your pager until you return.
Regarding assigned call rooms, the GSICU housekeeper is responsible to clean the call rooms every day. If you ever find the room not cleaned, please let the front desk, Dr. Djogivic, Dr. Buchanan and Marie Reinhart know.
