Welcome to your Critical Care rotation at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital!
Please review the below information prior to your rotation.
The ICU is located on the second floor, unit 24 and is shared between ICU and CCU. Please discuss scheduling with your attending at the beginning of each week.
The GNH ICU is a 24 hour in-house intensivist coverage model, split between 3 physicians so you are supported well at all hours of the day. The "A" intensivist covers the days 0800-1600 as well as Sunday nights. The "B" intensivist covers Mon/Wed/Fri 1600-0800 and the "C" intensivist covers Tues/Thurs/Sat 1600-0800.
Please arrive at Unit 24 for 0745 Monday morning where you will meet the outgoing and incoming intensivists for handover.
Please review the information on the General Rotation Information page.
Call Schedule:
You are expected to do 7 in-house calls including one weekend (one Friday or Sunday and one Saturday). Please fill in the call schedule emailed to you based on this expectation.
When on call we expect you to stay in-house. You will function as a junior attending - first triaging, reviewing, and managing consults while keeping the staff person up to date as appropriate. Again, please clarify with each of your attending what their expectations are after hours, as practice patterns may vary.
Call Room Washroom Information
There has been a change to the use of the shared washroom in your respective call room. Please note the following:
First of all, for your call shift you will continue to pick up the call room key from the desk for your call room (call room 2014) at unit 24 and return it to the desk after the completion of each call shift.
There is an upper lock on the washroom door above the door handle in your call room. Residents can now use their call room key to open the washroom door. Please knock on the door first to ensure the washroom is free before entering.
Once you enter the washroom, you MUST lock the door of the adjacent call room from inside the washroom to ensure your privacy. When you are finished using the washroom you MUST unlock the washroom door of the adjacent call room so your fellow colleague has access to the washroom.
If anyone forgets to unlock the adjacent washroom door, there will be a washroom key at the desk at unit 24 which is only to be used if you are locked out and must be returned immediately to the unit desk.
Alternately, if there is an urgent situation, a public washroom is just to the left of this call room.
Also, if for any reason you do not feel secure in your call room knowing there is an adjacent call room linked to yours via the washroom, you can use your call room key and lock the washroom door inside your respective call room.
