We want to understand how home air quality affects children's asthma. To do that, we need to understand what is in home air. Every home is different.
Next, we want to see which air chemicals get taken up into the body. We also want to measure what the body does with those chemicals, so we will need to check in on health, asthma control, and sleep.
Some people can have less asthma symptoms when they have a HEPA filter in their bedroom. The A-OK study follows you for 3 months with a HEPA filter in your bedroom. We check to see if your home air chemicals change and if the chemicals your body takes in changes as well. Finally, we check to see if cleaning the air changes your health.
A-OK is a pilot study, meaning only a few people participate, allowing us to ensure that everything works before running our bigger study, ADAPT.
Alongside learning about home air and asthma, we also want to ensure that it is easy for participants to carry out the study activities. We will continuously check in with you to see how things are going, ask for your advice on how to improve this study, and if this study can answer your questions about asthma and air quality. This study also helps confirm that the air quality monitors work
This study will continuously monitor for particles, and then we will conduct a chemical check and furnace filter wipe
This study will collect monthly urine samples to determine which chemicals the body takes in
We will check in on health, monitor lung function, and participants will have questionnaires to answer
A HEPA filter will be installed in your bedroom and throughout this 3 month study, we will check in every month
☑ Children aged 5-17 years old with asthma that is not currently well controlled
