The Children's Environmental Health Clinic (ChEHC) was founded in 1999 by Dr. Harold Hoffman and Dr. Irena Buka as part of the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units (PEHSU) network in North America, making ti the first program of its kind in Canada (previously known as PEHSU Canada).
Initially, support became available through provincial healthcare funding, and the Clinic's limited resources were directed towards treating patients with environmentally-related concerns. Over time, educating healthcare professionals and the community became a key priority. As the unit continues to grow and develop, the Clinic has introduced a multifaceted research component that supports its clinical and educational missions.
As a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and researchers, we strive to develop a comprehensive program where clinical care is supported by research to identify linkages between health and the environment. We also aim to provide education on how to best protect children from environmental hazards and to educate a new generation of highly qualified personnel in children's environmental health.
