How do I complete the Indigenous Health elective?
Attend & participate in 12h of Indigenous Health sessions, this can include joint Community Engagement events
For example: 8h Sweat Lodge + 1h Lunch talk + 3h Power & privilege session
Note: if you do not anticipate fulfilling 12h of IH content, please consider attending other CE events to fulfil a Community Engagement Mix & Match Elective
How is this elective different from what we are taught in our formal pre-clerkship Indigenous Health modules?
Our intention is to highlight some of the pieces of different Indigenous cultures that are not taught about in the classroom. Most of us are aware of the social determinants of health, colonialism, and various other factors that have and continue to impact Indigenous health, but we don't get opportunities to learn about ceremony, traditional medicine, the power of community and relationships in Indigenous worldviews - these are things that we hope you will experience & gain an appreciation of through the elective.
