Yes. The Community Engagement team and the Global Health Program at the University of Alberta are currently working on finalising what international opportunities will be available for students for the summer of 2024. Students must complete the 12 hour Global Health Education and Advocacy elective prior to participating in any exchange organized by the IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students' Association) or if you are planning on participating in an exchange coordinated through the Global Health Program (Field stations, Non-Field stations). You only need to complete the elective once in 1st or 2nd year. For example, if you complete the elective during the 2023-2024 academic year, you are eligible to participate in exchanges during both summer 2024 and 2025. 

The GHEA elective can be completed either during your 1st or 2nd year of pre-clerkship, but you are required to complete the 12 hours consecutively in one academic year to be eligible for participating in the international exchange elective. You only need to complete the elective once. For instance, if you complete the elective during the 2023-2024 academic year, you are eligible to participate in exchanges during both summer 2024 and 2025. 

Yes. This has changed from previous years. All students completing any international electives, including European exchanges, are required to complete the GHEA elective.
