Does the EQ-5D-5L capture Indigenous concepts of health? Traditional metrics of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were not designed with Indigenous worldviews in mind. Lilla Roy and Kristen Swampy will provide a brief overview of the contextual history, explore findings on this gap within the context of Alberta and Canada, and discuss how Indigenous people interpret standard HRQoL measures. They will conclude with collaborative dialogue on how to move forward in a way that reflects Indigenous perspectives and promotes accurate and respectful use of HRQoL tools by health economists and policy makers.

APERSU's Research Manager, Dr. Fatima Al Sayah will present findings from a study conducted in collaboration with the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) examining how different WCB rehabilitation programs impact injured workers’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL), as measured by the EQ-5D-5L. This study also explored the predictive validity of EQ-5D-5L scores in forecasting return-to-work outcomes. Taken together, these findings demonstrate the value of HRQoL measurement for evaluating program impact and supporting evidence-informed decision-making within workers’ compensation systems.
