3-ESS2-1.
Represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe typical weather conditions expected during a particular season.
Students will be able to define Precipitation and explain its role within the water cycle
-Glass jar (mason jar)
-cotton balls
-Water
-Green Food Coloring
-Student Journals
Intro: The teacher will recall what the students learned about yesterday ( Condensation). Then the teacher will introduce the lesson for today by asking the students if they have ever heard of precipitation. Students will respond to the discussion with their answers.
Activity: The teacher will divide the class into groups of 3 students, the students will sit at tables with their groups. Each group will receive a glass jar, a cup of water, and blue food coloring. Students will place three drops of blue food coloring into their cup of water, turning it blue. Then, students will place the cotton balls into the glass jar and use the dropper to add the water to the cotton balls slowly. They will continue to add the water, and soon the blue water will drip beneath the cotton balls, representing the precipitation coming from clouds. While this occurs, students will write down their observations, noticings, and wonders into their student journals. During this time, the teacher will be walking around and answering questions to the groups as needed. When they are finished, they will clean up their materials.
Closure: The teacher will ask the students what they believe and what part of the water cycle was demonstrated during this lesson The students will respond with precipitation. The teacher then will ask why and explain how in was being precipitated and released from the clouds (cotton balls).
A video will then be shown to deeper their understanding on the concept
