The Rhythm of the Rain by Grahame Baker-Smith (Day 3 or 4)
This story is about a kid named Issac, who empties a jar of water into a mountain pool. He follows the water, leading him to the ocean, showing the collection (day 4) portion of the water cycle. His adventure takes him up into the clouds and he comes back down with the rain, showing the precipitation role within the water cycle.
The Water Cycle at Work by Rebecca Olein
This book breaks down each part of the water cycle. Within each part, it gives a detailed overview of the parts of the water cycle, includes images of each part, as well as providing examples to further learning of the water cycle. This story is a great book to use on the review day of the lesson (day 5) and tying all the parts learned throughout this unit together.
A Drop Around the World By Barbara Shaw McKinney
This book provides vivid images and explanations of examples of the water cycle seen throughout the world. Within each page, there are characters next to each paragraph, each character representing a different portion of the water cycle. Then, at the end of the book, there is a detailed explanation of the meaning behind the special character, its role in the water cycle, and its definition. This book will be used on the first day as a preview of where we see the water cycle in the real world and to frontload students with information they will be focusing on within this unit.
The portion especially on evaporation (day 1), for students to get a clear understanding of real-world examples of evaporation to deepen their learning.
Drop-An Adventure through the Water Cycle by Emily Kate Moon
This book is a story that is in the perspective of a drop of water and what happens to him throughout each part of the water cycle. It has an incredible explanation of the condensation part of the water cycle and this story will be used on day 2 of the learning segment (condensation) to show students another example to deepen their understanding of the condensation portion of the water cycle.
The Great Big Water Cycle Adventure by Kay Barnham
This is a story about two kids who want to follow the journey of water. Doing so leads them to see the different phases water goes through, showing them the different parts of the water cycle.
The book explains what is occurring during each of the parts within the water cycle and is a great book to show at the end of the learning segment
Water is Water by Miranda Paul
This book goes over the parts of the water cycle.
This book will be used on day 4 of the lesson segment and focus primarily on the pages that talk about water collection and how 71% of the earth's surface is water. These pages will be used prior to beginning the learning task activity.
These books are related to science literacy by explaining the scientific concepts related to the water cycle with explicit details and explanations to explain the concepts in a fun and engaging way relevant to their age group. They allow students to connect their learning to images and create new images inside their heads to further their curiosity.
