Tonal Still Life | Graphite 2023
Reductive Self-Portrait | Charcoal 2023
The Introduction to Drawing course presented me with different materials, techniques, and challenges encountered while drawing. Above, I present two of the ones I am the most proud of.
On the left is a graphite tonal still-life drawing I developed in class. Here, we were instructed to start with basic shapes and go deeper in detail as we advanced in the paper. I spent a long time ensuring the reflections were in the right spot and the proportions were precise. This activity taught me to be attentive to details while maintaining a broad and comparative picture.
On the right is a charcoal reductive self-portrait. One of the first times I drew with charcoal, It was also interesting to challenge myself using the reductive method - starting with a dark charcoal canvas and erasing the highlights - and being attentive to my face. In the back, I added Monkee parakeets, reminding me of my family and home in Brazil.
