Project Name: Fitness Solution for People Living Independently at Home after Age 65
Client: Maury Fredricks
Team members: Louis Gabison, Rishi Kothari, Diego Alamillos, Matt Saperstein
Date: 05/26/2022
Version: 3
Problem Statement
People ages 65 and above lack the resources and guidance required to carry out holistically beneficial fitness activities that are integrated within their homes. This leads to an increase in physical ailments and increased difficulty completing daily activities.
Mission Statement
We want to empower people ages 65 and above to integrate user-centered fitness routines into their lives by providing them with the guidance and resources that will motivate them to exercise at home. Our end goal is to help our users maintain a high quality of life and be able to live their lives without the effects of aging holding them back.
Project Deliverables
Our project deliverables include a final report, final prototype or proof of concept, and an in-class presentation during the last week of the quarter.
Constraints
10 weeks to research, sketch, and develop a solution to the problem
Lack of end users
$100 budget
Solution must be easy for people above age 65 to use and set up on their own
Solution must also be safe to use and it cannot require continuous maintenance by someone
Our client, Maury, requested that we make a physical solution that is stow-able, compact, modular, and flexible
However, we concluded based on mockup testing that an app would best solve our users’ problem
Users and Stakeholders
Client

Users
People above age 65 who want to exercise on their own at home and are capable of using a smartphone
Stakeholders
Family and friends who are struggling to age at home
User Profile
Our general group of users is people above age 65 who want to exercise on their own at home. These people want to be able to stay fit in their own homes without having to get people to come to their house to help them exercise. Maury told us that he knows of people in this category who experience this problem and he would be able to connect us with them to conduct more research and testing during the design process.
Illustrative User Scenario
One of our users is Louis Gabison’s grandfather, who is above age 70. He wakes up each day around 7 AM. He goes outside his house to do his usual gardening work. The work involves bending down using his back and knees. Sometimes it is difficult for him to stand back up when he is bent over for an extended period of time. After about an hour of work, he goes back inside his house. Occasionally, his back and knees hurt after working in the garden. Later in the day, he walks around his neighborhood for about 30 minutes. Every other day, he swims in the pool for about an hour. During some of this time, he does laps and the rest of the time, he slowly moves around in the water. While Louis Gabison’s grandfather enjoys working out on a regular basis to look good in front of his friends, he sometimes lacks motivation to continue exercising (especially when he feels aches and pains from gardening).
Project Requirements - Needs Identification, Metrics, and Specifications
Functional Requirements
The solution that engages our clients in physical activity, not necessarily something that is a standalone fitness product. It could be a solution that fits into the clients’ daily lives.
The solution needs to be easy to set up and use for the clientele. (They should be able to implement it themselves).
The solution should accommodate their physical capabilities and offer varying levels of intensity and a wide range of exercise types.
The solution should be easy to maintain and require minimal repair or adjustment. It should be safe to use.
Non-Functional Requirements
Should be fun
Gives users a sense of freedom
Makes users feel fulfilled
Note: Since our solution will be digital, we do not have specifications on the size and metrics of a physical product.
Specifications for App
Must educate users on fitness routines through a variety of methods
Exercise routines for our users must be based on guidance from the CDC and medical professionals to ensure health and safety
Must motivate our users through visual queues
Must prioritize user privacy
App must be tailored to users needs
