Overview: This learning activity is designed to enhance student understanding with some of the concepts related to Globalization. Students will be asked to create a mind map using and Web 2.0 tool called Coggle.
Objectives: The overarching goal of this activity is to have students find connections between their local community and the rest of the world and for the students demonstrate their interconnectivity in our globalized world. More specifically, this activity is designed to address the following learner outcomes from Alberta Social 10-1 curriculum:
- 1.5 explore understandings and dimensions of globalization (political, economic, social, other contemporary examples)
- 1.7 analyze opportunities presented by globalization to identities and cultures (acculturation, accommodation, cultural revitalization, affirmation of identity, integration)

- 4.8 analyze how globalization affects individuals and communities (migration, technology, agricultural issues, pandemics, resource issues, contemporary issues)
Description of activity: At the end of this activity (1 or 2 class periods), students will have created a digital mind map which demonstrates how our community (and themselves) is connected with the rest of the globe. Students will do this using a resource called Coggle which will allow students to collaborate with others if they wish and save directly to their Google Drive. They should include nodes such as the environment, economy, entertainment, basic necessities, population. Following these suggested steps should provide for a positive learning experience:
- Introduce topic by brainstorming with class by asking “How is our hometown connected with the rest of the world?” Some examples may be, we export oil to China or we have accepted refugees from Syria
- Describe the purpose of a mind map and show some examples.
- Explain that they will create their own mind map in Coggle.
- Show this video which describes Coggle. If necessary, here is an additional video that describes the basics of creating an mindmap in any format
- Have students create a Coggle account using their Google credentials (this will allow for projects to be easily saved in their Drive)
- Provide students with this Google Doc which describes the criteria for creating this mind map
- Have students begin the activity.
