Content Area Project- Art/PE/Music

For this project I've created a cross curricular resource and learning activity. First, I created a resource in Buncee that deals with one effect of globalization on culture which is cultural hybridization. With access to so many cultural styles in art, dance (which is part of our PE program) and music, it is only natural for us to start to blend and mix styles together. Below you will find my first Buncee presentation and the learning activity that I created to accompany it.

Learning Activity

Activity overview:

This activity is designed to take concepts from social studies and use them in an Art, Physical Education or Music classroom. Specifically, learners will learn about cultural influences from around the world and then apply that knowledge by exploring art, dance and music from another culture. Students will then demonstrate their understanding of cultural hybridization by blending an art, dance or music technique from the culture studied and blend that with a western technique. For example, Djembe drums could be used in a rock and roll setting creating a "new" sound.

Sequence of activities:

1. Have students view the Buncee presentation titled Culture in a globalized world
2. Discuss the examples provided in class. Focus on which area is most appropriate for the students (art, music, etc). Brainstorm further examples of world cultures.
3. Have students research a new art form from another culture and have them find "how to" documents or videos on the internet.
4. Discuss the concept of hybridization and the examples provided.
5. Have students create their own hybrid based on the culture researched and culture provided. For example, in art class they could recreate an impressionistic painting with anime figures. Bollywood and country line dances could be combined in a phys ed class. Djembe drums (or something similar) could be added to a jazz song in music class.
6. Have students present their hybrids by using the following formats:

• Youtube video- This would be great for Dance/PE class
• Voicethread- This would work well in art class for students to reflect and comment on each other's pieces of art
• Audio recording using Garage Band or Audacity- This would be appropriate for music class
