On this page, you will find a social action project that I would use in my Social 10-1 classroom. Social Studies 10-1 focuses on Globalization and many of the challenges that face the world today. Students will identify an issue they want to find a solution to and then use a variety of social media platforms to share their ideas, connect with each other and to work on solving some of our world's problems.

In this course, we have discussed a number of global challenges, poverty, environmental issues, overpopulation, etc. You are now getting a chance to use the power of social media to help the world solve one of these serious issues. In essence, we are going to use the power of globalization to solve some of the issues this phenomenon has created. To accomplish this, you will need to follow these steps:
- Choose an issue. Here is a list of global issues you can choose from:
- Climate change/Environmental challenges
- Economic disparity/Poverty
- Human trafficking
- Child labour
- Culture/Language loss
- Overpopulation
- Education of young women/Women's issues
- Free trade
- Conflict Diamonds
- Blood Diamonds
2. Identify solutions. Once you have identified a problem, find ways to solve it!
3. Share with your classmates in a classroom blog. I have created a classroom blog in which every student will have authoring privileges. Create a blog entry which describes the issue you have chosen and outlines strategies in which we can help that situation improve.
4. Create an awareness campaign. Make the world aware of your cause by creating a Facebook page dedicated to raising awareness and solutions to your cause. You can post videos, links to related NGO's, etc. Post a brief description of this page and a link on our classroom blog. Also you can post this on my social action Facebook page I have set up as an example for you to follow.
5. Microblog about it. Create a Twitter account and create 5 tweets that raise awareness of your cause and your campaign to improve things. Include the hashtag #studentscanhelp. Ask your readers to retweet!
6. Reflect about it. Write a blog post where you reflect on your attempt at solving a global problem. How effective was it? What else needs to be done? Do you think your issue will ever be solved? etc.
To summarize, you will write three blog posts on our classroom blog, create a Facebook page and send out 5 Tweets. Please note these are the minimum requirements. If you wish to do more, go right ahead.
