Apply professional and ethical standards (e.g., accessibility, diversity, copyright) to all aspects of teaching and learning.
Students in middle school grades are learning how to research topics and complete assignments using evidence from websites and articles, which sometimes can result in plagiarism. This Plagiarism Scavenger Hunt webpage was created as an interactive online learning tool for middle school students to study and learn more about the topic of plagiarism. The webpage was developed as a scavenger hunt where students research and find information using the links provided. It also includes a video and guiding questions for students to explore the topic of plagiarism.
This online scavenger hunt represents the PLO for Ethics as it supports students in learning and understanding the ethical implications of plagiarism and guidelines for avoiding it. Students will be able to learn how to become ethically responsible citizens and be able to comply with their school's academic policies.
Providing accessibility is a vital component that cannot be overlooked when designing and creating websites or web pages. For people with hearing, vision, or other impairments, having accessibility to some websites can be restrictive or limiting, which results in them not being able to view, listen to, or interact with the material as initially intended by the web designer. This artifact, Web Accessibility for People with Hearing Impairments, provides information and guidelines about the need for making websites accessible for people with hearing impairments and tools and links to support that.
When researching the information for this website, I learned more about hearing impairments, types of auditory disabilities, and how to make changes to the features and design elements of a website to make it more accessible. By testing my HTML and CSS code with accessibility-detecting websites, I learned how to adjust my webpage to better support various users.
This Digital Citizenship artifact is an infographic that provides facts and guidelines to support students in becoming ethical and responsible technology users. Digital citizenship refers to using and communicating safely and respectfully with technology. As students use technology for educational and other purposes, they need to learn vital skills, such as protecting their privacy, interacting with others online, and being careful with the information they research. This artifact supports the PLO of Ethics by teaching students how to be respectful, safe, and smart when using technology. By using and referring to this infographic, my students can make better choices when using technology to participate in an ethically responsible classroom environment.
The AECT Code of Ethics provides ethical standards for professionals working with educational technology, including teachers and administrators. For this artifact, Professional Ethics Animation, I used Powtoon to create an informational video that provides an example of an ethical scenario in which a potential client offers an administrator a gift. The video presents the ethical dilemma and explains that according to the AECT Codes for commitment to the profession, it is not ethical to accept gratuities, gifts, or favors that might impair professional judgment or decisions. This artifact supports the PLO for ethics by following the AECT guidelines for professional ethics in the workplace.
