"And yet Samuel loved the forest now. He knew the sounds and smells and images like he knew his own mind, his own yard. Each time he had entered he'd gone farther, learned more, marked more trees with his knife, until he always knew where he was. Now he thought of the deep forest as his home, as much as their cabin." (Chapter 1, p. 10).
Teacher Note: In these activities, students will interact with each other about the book Woods Runner by Gary Paulson. See the teacher notes below each task to know how far students should read before completing the task.
Watch the I Survived - Beyond the Battlefield virtual field trip to gain a better understand of the Revolutionary War before you read the book.
Could you survive in the wilderness?
Think about what we've learned about Samual so far and his ability to hunt and navigate the woods around his cabin. Samual's parents cannot even venture far into the woods without feeling some anxiety.
For this assignment, you will log into FlipGrid and create a 1 minute video that describes how you would find food, shelter, and navigate in the woods during the 1770's. Remember, Samual didn't have cell phones, GPS, or other modern day survival resources. Plan out what you want to say before you record your video, one minute goes very fast! Respond to 2 other peer's videos.
Teacher Note: For this activity, students should have read through page 38 of the book Woods Runner. They will need access to a webcam, iPad, or phone to create a short video. Remind students to write down an outline or script of what they want to say. Keeping it under 1 minute forces them to be clear and concise on their answer.
Now that Samual has met Annie, what do you think will happen to her? Log into our Language Arts Edmondo group and vote in the pole below. Once you have voted, comment about your choice, citing evidence from the text to support your answer.
Teacher Note: Students should have read through page 98 before completing this task. Students will need to access the classroom Edmondo group to take the poll and explain their answer in the comments.
Samual and Annie have a unique bond that has kept them together through some rough times. For this task, you will visit Padlet and respond to the following question: Describe the connection between Samual & Annie, citing evidence from the book to support your answer. Once you are done, respond to 2 other student's posts.
Teacher Note: Students should have read through page 109 before completing this task.
