Events Leading up to the Revolutionary War
Introduction to Lesson:
Students have been studying the events leading up to the Revolutionary War. In this lesson, students will examine primary source documents that depict events leading up to the Revolutionary War. They will reflect on what the author’s purpose of the picture is and their inference of what is happening. Students will then create a Google Map that incorporates each primary source document at its correct location and includes their analysis of the primary source.

Part 1: Analyzing Primary Sources
In Part 1, students will examine primary source documents analyzing the author’s purpose of the picture and infer what the picture is telling us.

- Students will access the Slides document through Google Classroom.
- On the first slide, review as a class what a primary source is.
- To prepare students to answer the questions on the slides, it is important to review what an author’s purpose is and review what an inference is. Slides 2 & 3 review this and serve as anchor charts for the students to reference.
- Students will study each primary source picture and decide what the author’s purpose is and what they can infer the author’s message is in the picture.
Part 2: Locating Events
Part 2: Locating Events
Now that students have learned about the events and studied primary sources, they will now locate the primary events on Google Maps and provide a picture and description of each location.

5.SS.2.1.1 Develop and use different kinds of maps, globes, graphs, charts, databases, and models to display and obtain information.

- As a class, students will learn how to locate events on a map, add a picture, and add a summary of the event.
- Create a map

- Add a picture
- Students will then use their notes, as well as any text we’ve use to learn about the events, and create their own Google Map of the Events leading up to the Revolutionary War. They will mark the location, add a picture, and summary description of the event. Each of the following events should be listed on the map.

- Boston Massacre
- First Continental Congress
- Declaration of Independence
- Concord Battle
- Lexington Battle
- Students will share the link to their finished map with the teacher through Google Classroom.
