BFA in Studio Art/Graphic Design
I use photography and film processing techniques in order to question the world around me. I explore ideas about time and the transition of objects and places as they either develop or deteriorate in response to human interaction. My work takes problems created by human existence and poses possible solutions that can be found in the subconscious mind. Using abstraction and deconstruction, my photographs often depict dream-like realities.
I am invested in the physical process of photographic development, from darkroom processes to more experimental methodology. I use alternative processes and hand manipulation of photographic materials to express my artistic style. By cutting up or layering imagery together, I approach my experimental work through the use of collages. I am very tactile by nature and use that sensory connection to texture, density, and mass in my artistic practice.
My work consists of digital photography, film photography, and alternative process imagery. I photograph urban and rural areas, architecture, landscapes, and still life scenes. My photography consists of a minimalist, muted color palette or a monochromatic and often achromatic color scheme. The images often contain multiple perspectives or planes of existence in order to challenge people’s idea of time and space.
My series “Nowhere to Grow” explores the relationship of urban growth to natural environments. The expansion of urban areas forces back the natural growth of the land, boxing it into smaller and smaller areas. In the images I altered the temperature of the natural landscapes to a red-orange color to portray the urgency and danger of the destruction. The architectural images were made black and white to reflect people's polarizing attitude surrounding the subject matter. The land is trapped inside the structures, stifled by the surrounding urban expansion with nowhere to grow.
