Welcome to Kindergarten!!
Here are some answers to frequently asked questions in my class.
Should my child wear a uniform every day?
-YES!!! Specific requirements are in the student handbook. Children must wear athletic shoes ( sneakers) DAILY, even on picture days and dress down days.
How does lunch work?
-Children can bring a lunch box from home, or order a school lunch. They will walk the lunch line and choose a meal. Please discuss healthy options and the cost of extra snacks.
Will my child need a snack from home?
-YES!! We will have a pm snack daily that you will need to provide. I will have some special days where I bring a snack to share. It is important that you let me know all food allergies and if you would not like your child to eat the extra snack items.
Will my child have rest time?
-YES! We will have 15 minutes towards the end of each day. This is a quiet time to relax with our thoughts, listen to music and occasionally look at a book quietly.
How will we communicate?
-Each day your child will bring home a binder with their purchased agenda ($7) in it. Please look at this nightly and sign or initial where the parent signature line is. Most grades will require this so it's good to get in the habit now! 🙂 Here is where you will see any notes about the day. Please write how your child will be going home for the week! Feel free to email me at andrea.homan@tvcs.org
Will my child have homework?
-Your child may have homework in the front of the binder. Paper homework should only take about 10 minutes. I encourage you to read nightly with your child as well!
Please email me at andrea.homan@tvcs.org if you have any questions.
A little bit about me.....
My name is Andi Homan and I will be your child's teacher this year!!! I was born in Michigan, but spent most of my early adult life teaching in New York (on Long Island). This is my 12th year at the Charter School and 25th year as an educator. I graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette Indiana. BOILER UP!!!!! I received my Masters degree in Literacy from Touro College in Manhattan NY. (I passionately love the city). I have taught pre-k through 4th grade, but my passion has always been in Kindergarten. I have one son, Ryland, who will be starting 6th grade this year! As well as 3 more children I parent, ages 19, 17, and 14.
Some of my favorites are....
The color BLUE and PURPLE,
All sports, especially Swimming, Volleyball and Golf.
Elephants ( but really all animals) . I have 2 aquatic turtles and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel at home.
Coffee and Cheese! - but not together!! ;) If I could have any other job beside teaching I would love to be a foody, traveling the world and eating!! :)
A little bit about expectations.....
My classroom is always a fun and exciting place to learn as well as a kind and respectful room to grow. We work very hard everyday in here and I hope you continue to work on the skills we practice at home nightly. Communication is very important, especially learning the procedures for both home and school life. Please check the binder nightly to discuss the days events as well as the kindergarten link for the monthly newsletter updates!!
I expect students to arrive at school ready to learn! We use Kelso's choices in our room, as well as an enforced behavior system. The wheel of Kelso's choices will be sent home and reviewing the choices with your child is a great way to reinforce what we discuss during the day. Children are taught to take positive actions to help themselves be successful with academics and peers throughout the day.
Successful tips:
Snacks! Please send in a healthy snack for your child per day! Kids cannot work if they are hungry!
Students should be practicing shoe-tying and self-help skills regarding clothing (tucking in shirts, using belts, hand washing, using tissues, and the restroom) in order to help make the transitions during the day smoother.
Check the agenda for daily behavior and any notes from me. Please initial you have checked the binder, removed any work completed in the back to keep home, and review with your child. Also, let me know how your child will be going home each day in the planner. This is very important!!
READ EVERY NIGHT!!! One story a night before bed is a positive benefit for both you and your child. The AR goal is set for 3 points this semester!
Some Kindergarten Learning Goals......
I expect all students should be able to:
Write their first (and last) name using upper and lowercase letters correctly.
Use pencils, scissors, and glue appropriately.
Name each letter and the sound that corresponds.
Count to 100 (and recognize the numbers to 120).
Quick addition to 10
Produce a Rhyme
Segment sounds C-A-T= cat
Adding and deleting sounds to the beginning or ending of a word to made a new word
Reading sight words or High Frequency words: the class will call them HEART WORDS, because they need to know them by heart.
If your student has not attempted these skill yet please practice nightly to insure they will stay on track:) More to come as we learn from each other!
