Dear First Grade Families!       

 Hello October!

 October is a busy month! We are approaching the end of the first quarter and there are a few events coming up.

Here is what the students will be learning this month:

Math- We are focusing on additon and subtraction as well as related facts.

Reading- Students are learning how to identify the topic and relevant details in a text, use text features to deomonstrate understanding, and identify stanzas and line breaks in a poem.

Phonics- Week of  September 28- October 2- nk and digraphs review                                                                                           Week of October 5-9 - a_e and i_e

Science- Students will learn about the properties of matter and motion.

This is Fire Safety Month. We will have a community helpers visit October 9.

The Book Fair is October 5-9. Our class will be going Monday morning. If your child is not ready to purchase something that day, they will have opportunities to go throughout the week. 

First grade is going on a field trip to the Orlando Science Center Thursday, November 19. We will leave school at 8:15 a.m. and travel by bus to Orlando. We will return to Middleton at approximately 3:00 p.m. The cost for students is $50 and includes admission, lunch, and transportation. The cost for chaperones is $35 and includes admission and lunch. You can pay through Skyward, send exact cash, or a check payable to VCS. If paying by check, please include your child's name and first grade field trip in the memo line. If you would like to chaperone, make sure you have filled out a Volunteer Application online and send in the form indicating your interest by Friday, October 2. Five chaperones will be chosen by drawing if more than five parents want to chaperone. Chaperones will be chosen and notified Monday, October 5. Chaperones must provide their own transportation. Each chaperone will receive approximately 4.5 hours of PI time. All money and consent forms are due by Friday, October 23.

Wednesday, October 21- Class Pictures and Fall Picture Retakes

Friday, October 23- Field Trip Forms and Money Due

First grade is a fun year.  I am looking forward to a successful year!  I believe that you and I are a team working together to help your child develop emotionally and academically.  You are the most important person in your child’s life and you are also a teacher in your child’s life.  I know if we work together and communicate, your child will have a very successful year!
