Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents and Students,​

Welcome to Tucson Unified Virtual Academy (TUVA). We are excited that you and your student have decided to continue learning online with TUSD for the 2023-2024 school year. I am excited to introduce myself as the Principal of TUVA. As a TUSD employee for over 20 years I have worked in several different positions: a Teacher, Curriculum Service Provider, Interim Assistant Principal, District Testing Coordinator. My husband and I have two children, one just graduated from Sahuaro and the other attends ASU, as well as many interesting pets. I have a strong passion for working with students and families and I am looking forward to this school year, the adventures of online learning, and the chance to get to know your family.

I am excited to introduce to you and welcome back Karyn Anton our K-8 Assistant Principal and Melissa Molina Garcia 6-12 Assistant Principal.  I am excited to have them both work with our TUVA students as they are amazing administrators!​

Teacher Led classes for students will start on Thursday, August 3rd at 8:15. Students will access classes via zoom. Zoom links will be on each student's CANVAS home page. CANVAS is our learning management system and where students will access and turn in work. Only parents/guardians with educational rights that had BOTH an email AND phone number in ParentVue had an account set up. Your phone number is the password (10 digits). You can login through the Canvas Parent app or here: https://tusd1.instructure.com/login/canvas. Here is a handout with directions on accessing accounts. We hope you find this helpful in keeping up with  your scholar’s education.​

Self-Scheduled students will have classes in APEX available to work on starting at 12:01am on Thursday, August 3rd. It is important to make progress each week so make sure to schedule time to complete work. Each class should get approximately 5 hours a week of time. You have the flexibility as to how you want to break up those 5 hours a week. ​

Laptops, Supplies, and Curriculum​

All TUVA students are required to use a school computer. Students will pick up laptops and curriculum from Catalina High School 3645 E Pima St, Tucson, AZ 85716 in the TUVA office right off the parking lot. TUVA student pick up will be on Thursday July 27th and Friday July 28th from 8:00-4:00. Students may request a hot spot for the internet. If you are unable to attend during these times, please contact TUVA 520-232-8700 to setup a time that works for you. If your student needs supplies such as pencils, paper, folders, or other supplies you can request those when you pick up the laptop. Only students in Kinder–3rd grades will have curriculum to pick up. All other students will have their curriculum available through our online platforms. ​


First Day of School

​School begins on Thursday, August 3rd, 2023, at 8:15am. Students will access CANVAS by CLEVER and the zoom link will be in their CANVAS folder. If you do not know how your student is to login the first day of school, please contact the office at 520-232-7700 or visit the Zoom Help Desk.

Absences​

A student’s daily attendance is vitally important to their academic success. Teacher Led Students are required to log into all Synchronous class periods. Self-Scheduled Students should login 5 hours per class per week. However, we do know that students may need to miss a class due to an illness or appointment.  If your student will be absent from class, please contact the front office at 520-232-8700, email tuvak12@tusd1.org, or join the Zoom Help Room.

Would you like to meet your scholar's teacher before the first day of school? Teachers will be available from 2:30-3:30 in their classroom Zoom links on Wednesday August 2nd. Students will find the classroom Zoom links on their Canvas page.
