TUSD’s AI implementation is thoughtfully organized into five distinct phases, each representing a key stage in our journey toward meaningful, sustainable integration. Explore the phases below to see how we’re building capacity, fostering innovation, and supporting educators and students every step of the way.
✨Vision: To make the integration of technology in all classrooms a pedagogical expectation while simultaneously supporting Portrait of a Graduate.
✨ Using the SAMR Model as an approach to integrating technology into instruction across grade levels and content areas.
✨ The TUSD AI Literacy Initiative is also driven by CA legislation and state mandates, including Assembly Bills 2876 and 873.
✨ The EdTech Team developed a Technology Scope & Sequence to support K-12 teachers in tech implementation.
✨ In Fall 2024, the EdTech Team hosted a webinar for the TUSD community to share information about the implementation of Artificial Intelligence, Critical Media Literacy, & the AI Exploration Program in TUSD.
✨ LACOE published an article spotlighting TUSD for its early and visionary leadership in AI integration, showcasing the district’s pioneering efforts as a model for others navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of educational technology.
TUSD conducted anonymous surveys for both teachers and students to understand how AI is being utilized in supporting curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Starting the 2023-2024 school year, students have been surveyed twice each year regarding their preferred platforms, usage frequency, and reasons for using AI. Teachers have been surveyed annually, providing responses that offered insights into educator experiences and perspectives. Collecting this comprehensive feedback has been crucial for tailoring AI integration to effectively enhance educational outcomes.

The Torrance Unified School District's AI Committee (est. 2023) was composed of educators, administrators, parents/ guardians, and other district stakeholders. Overall, the AI committee's efforts were geared toward creating a well-defined and forward-looking framework for the responsible and effective use of Artificial Intelligence in education, with a strong emphasis on fostering digital citizenship and enhancing the learning experience.

The 2023–2024 TUSD AI Committee collaborated to establish strategic goals for integrating AI into teaching and learning. Their work led to the launch of the TUSD AI Exploration Program and the selection of AI tools designed to enhance instruction, foster innovation, and support students across all grade levels beginning in the 2024–2025 school year. Due to its success and growing interest, the program has been expanded and extended into the 2025–2026 school year.

This work will extend into 2025–2026, grounded in a districtwide vision for technology-integrated instruction and sustained by the SAMR framework, state mandates, and ongoing professional learning to support effective and ethical AI use. Additionally, the TUSD EdTech team designed a districtwide AI Literacy course to establish foundational knowledge, inspire innovative practices, and equip educators with practical strategies for responsible AI integration. This course was designed for administrators, district leaders, TOSAs, and teachers with administrative, credentialed, and certificated applications.

On June 6, 2024 the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) has released a comprehensive guide designed to empower TK-12 school districts to navigate the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. The "Generative Artificial Intelligence in TK-12 Education Guidelines" offers a roadmap for harnessing the potential of AI to personalize learning experiences, improve student engagement and support educators – all while prioritizing responsible technology use.
This resource, developed by a dedicated AI Task Force of over 40 members comprised of educators, non-profit groups, universities, philanthropic organizations, and most importantly students from across Los Angeles County, addresses the practical needs of educators and students, while remaining aligned with best practices for ethical AI development. One of our Torrance USD EdTech Team members served on the LACOE AI Task Force, contributing valuable insights and expertise to the project.
The guide covers key areas like needs assessment and risk evaluation, selecting trustworthy vendors, pilot testing AI tools, empowering educators and students, developing a communication strategy and ensuring responsible AI use.
