Torrance Unified School District (TUSD) is dedicated to integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a dynamic instructional tool to enrich learning and prepare students for a technology-centric future. Our comprehensive guidelines and board policies ensure AI is used responsibly, emphasizing critical media literacy, digital citizenship,  ethical practices, student privacy, academic honesty, and accessibility. These policies support teacher training in AI applications and promote digital citizenship among students. TUSD is enthusiastic about leveraging AI to enhance education, fostering academic excellence and innovative problem-solving across our schools.

On June 6, 2024 the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) has released a comprehensive guide designed to empower TK-12 school districts to navigate the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. The "Generative Artificial Intelligence in TK-12 Education Guidelines" offers a roadmap for harnessing the potential of AI to personalize learning experiences, improve student engagement and support educators – all while prioritizing responsible technology use.

This resource, developed by a dedicated AI Task Force of over 40 members comprised of educators, non-profit groups, universities, philanthropic organizations, and most importantly students from across Los Angeles County, addresses the practical needs of educators and students, while remaining aligned with best practices for ethical AI development. One of our Torrance USD EdTech Team members served on the LACOE AI Task Force, contributing valuable insights and expertise to the project.

The guide covers key areas like needs assessment and risk evaluation, selecting trustworthy vendors, pilot testing AI tools, empowering educators and students, developing a communication strategy and ensuring responsible AI use.
