Normal wear and tear is expected for Chromebooks, charging cables, and protective covers. If repair is needed, complete a 1:1 Technology Support Request.The Tuscaloosa City Schools Technology Department will determine if normal wear and tear has occurred and will process all repairs.
When damage to a Chromebook, charging cable, and/or protective cover issued to a student results from lack of care or intentional damage, the full cost of the repair must be paid for by the student’s parent/guardian. If repair is needed, complete a 1:1 Technology Support Request.Damage resulting from lack of care includes but is not limited to failure to properly use the protective cover. The full cost of any repair will be determined by market value at the time of repair. Students may not alter the protective cover placed on the device. This includes marking on it, intentionally scratching it, or adding stickers to it. If the protective cover is intentionally altered, the student must pay for a replacement cover upon return of the device.
Near the end of each school year or when a student withdraws from a school, students will check in their devices. Over the summer months, all devices will be checked for damage. Parents will be notified of any damage and corresponding costs for repair. Parents should be aware that due to the volume of devices to be cared for, there may be a delay in identification and notification of damage.
If a Chromebook, charging cable, and/or protective cover issued to a student is lost or stolen, the student’s parent/guardian must file a report with the police department, complete a 1:1 Technology Support Request, and provide a copy of the police report to the school technology coach or technology leader. The student’s family must pay the full cost of replacing the Chromebook, charging cable, and/or protective cover. Once one-half of the replacement cost has been paid, a replacement device will be ordered and a loaner device will be issued to the student. The full cost of any replacement will be determined by market value at the time of replacement.
At this time, the cost of a replacement Chromebook is $330 (iPads are $380). The cost of a replacement charging cable is $40 and a protective cover is $24 (iPad covers are $50). These costs are subject to change depending on what it costs TCS to purchase replacements.
