Is the PreMedical Academy only for students who want to be doctors?

No. If students are interested in any aspect of the field of medicine, the PreMedical Academy is a great opportunity for them to learn about the many disciplines available in health care. It is also very heavily science-based so students who may be interested in lab work or research can also find their niche.  Some students start the academy and later find that they are no longer interested in a health career and that's ok.... because the skills and discipline that they learn carry over into any future educational choice or career.

Is the PreMedical Academy difficult?

Yes, but perhaps a better term would be “challenging.”  The classes will be challenging for sure. The curriculum is rigorous starting right out with freshman year in honors English and Biology and we have high expectations. Keep in mind, however, that there are support systems in place to assist you in being successful - we have 4 teachers who will know you all very well and a dedicated counselor to keep tabs on you.  Our mission is to provide a quality education that will prepare you for the rigors of a future in medicine. Don’t be afraid of the work - rise to the challenge!

My home school is Tulare Union/ Mission Oak - do I have to transfer to Tulare Western?

Yes. All incoming students must transfer to the school that houses the academy of their choice. If this applies to you be sure that you filled out the application and the transfer information on it.

What does it mean that students are “cohorted”?

Students are cohorted in 4 academic classes together during their freshman and sophomore years. A “cohort” is basically just a group of the same students who will be in all 4 of these classes together. During junior and senior years, student will only be cohorted in 2 classes.

What is the Advisory Board all about?

The PreMedical Academy is overseen by an Advisory Board that consists of teachers, school administrators, district administrators and local professionals in various health fields.  The purpose of the Board is to serve in an advisory capacity by making recommendations to the site team about curriculum, activities and projects for the students. Additionally, they help with work-based learning activities as guest speakers, providing facility tours and serving as panelists for projects. The Board also contributes financial assistance to the PreMedical Academy for a variety of things like shirts, field trips and scholarships.
