Character:
One of the pillars of National Honor Society is character; the national chapter denotes that everyday character includes "valuing diverse cultures and building relationships that reflect love of self but also concern for others" ("Everyday Pillars of NHS"). NHS members represent not only themselves and Corona del Sol, but also the National NHS organization. Please keep this in mind when you are out in the community, here in the school community, and on social media sites. What you say and do in public venues and online can and will affect your relationships and reputation - and NHS in general. Please always be conscientious and appropriate. As with any club, sport, or school sponsored activity, members and participants are held to a higher standard.
Scholarship:
The value of scholarship extends across many spheres, including "making the most of the educational opportunities provided and seeking out learning, not only in school or similar settings, but also personally" ("Everyday Pillars of NHS"). In order to achieve true learning, you must be prepared and ready to dive in and show up for new experiences!
As such, NHS members need to check this site and school emails frequently for updated information regarding chapter events and community service opportunities. It is the member's responsibility to stay informed. You can't learn if you don't put in the effort!
Leadership: The National NHS Chapter explains that leadership means "carrying oneself with dignity and taking ownership and responsibility for one’s own actions and participation" ("Everyday Pillars of NHS"). Leadership comes not by position alone, but by the choices made and example set for peers. As members of NHS, we should act so that if others follow our lead, they are affected positively.
Attending and participating in NHS monthly meetings, seeking out and sharing service opportunities on and off campus, taking on responsibilities at home and in the community - all of these build leadership qualities.
Service:
NHS members are committed to the idea of everyday service, which can be defined as "seeing a need and fulfilling it voluntarily" ("Everyday Pillars of NHS"). Service is not just about the hours - it's about people and communities. Your service commitments help to build relationships and make changes not only locally, but often across the globe!
NHS members actively engage in regular service opportunities, seeking out unique ways to lift others. These can be small acts or long-term commitments. However, they should always reflect the concept of giving rather than checking a box on a list. Complete your service in this spirit, whether it's an on-campus event, local area event, or online event.
