High School Soccer Season Recap 2024
By: Anna Bennet
The soccer season at GM is reaching its end but we wanted to give you a recap of the girl's season to report what has happened so far.
We started the season hopeful that we would have enough numbers for a JV team. We have had 24 athletes with JV and Varsity combined for the majority of the season. We practice together and 6 of us are swing players who go to both games. The team's numbers are big in the senior and freshman classes, with the senior having 8 girls and the freshman having 10.
Mrs. Hutchins has been an excellent JV coach and Mrs. Hamilton has enjoyed coaching her 8th varsity season.
The JV team has had 6 games, playing Springfield twice so far. The other teams we have played have been tough games. We have been able to pull up middle schoolers for three of our games. One of them was when we played BBA. We won that game 5-3. We also had a great game on Saturday when we tied Brattleboro 1-1 after losing to them 7-0 the previous week.
The varsity record is 4-6-2. At our game last Saturday we had a full bus traveling to an away game in Brattleboro. 28 girls went because we had JV and Varsity games, both at 4:30 pm during Brattleboro’s homecoming weekend. It was great to have so many athletes ready to play and it gave us hope for the program and next season.
At Windsor last Tuesday 10/8 Green Mountain put up a great fight. We tied the undefeated girls team 1-1 in double overtime. Due to a goalie injury at Brattleboro, our backup goalie played the whole game. She had experience being a goalie in past seasons and did a fantastic job.
Our big game last week was when Springfield came to play us. We all wore blue jerseys funded by the money we raised doing a kid's soccer camp this August. For the game, we decorated the grounds, sold concessions, and had a bake sale. All of the fundraising went to BreakthroughT1D!
Throughout the season all of us girls have gotten to know each other better and improved greatly in playing together as a team. We hope to finish the season strong this week before playoffs. Come join us for the senior game! It is on Thursday, October 17th. We will be hosting Bellows Falls and it is our last home game.
