Mountain Biking Team 2024
By: Arlo Schilling
The GMUHS mountain biking team has had a great start to the year, gaining nine more riders than last season! With many young, up-and-coming riders learning quickly, they’re getting stronger each practice. As for the returning riders such as Ian Bernier, Sean Searl, Abatemarco, and Ryan Birmingham, they have only been improving and showing great leadership skills in mentoring newer riders.
With races usually being at least once or twice a week, plus practices, the team is always active. Luckily, traveling has been easier for the team with help from their new trailer and efficient school bus rides. You can find the team riding anywhere from Proctor Academy in New Hampshire, to Northfield Mount Herman in Massachusetts. One of the team's favorite stomping grounds is Vermont Academy, where they get to practice on most Mondays. Recently, the team traveled to Stratton Mountain for a race hosted by the Stratton Mountain School. More of their racing destinations are the Dublin School in New Hampshire, Mt. Peg in Woodstock, and the team's own race that they host at Ascutney Trails in West Windsor.
A special shoutout to Ian Bernier who has worked his way up to the A-class, the highest and most competitive class in the team's race series. Ian is doing exceptionally well, having already reached the podium once this season. After just last year, where he won his first A-class race at the Dublin School. Ian Bernier trains hard in the off-season: rock climbing, riding endurance events, and running track in the spring.
Congratulations to the team on their great year so far!
