Mock Trial Team

The Mendocino Coast Mock Trial Team is enthusiastically lead by TRCS Junior High teacher, Mr. Lang, with support from local Fort Bragg attorney, Julie Wood. The team is composed of 6th through 8th grade students, representing Three Rivers Charter School and Fort Bragg Middle School. A case booklet is released at the end of September and the team practices twice per week, in addition to some Saturday practices and scrimmages, until the competition in February.

A mock trial is a simulated criminal trial that features students in the roles of attorneys, witnesses, court clerks, and bailiffs, as well as courtroom artists and journalists. The purpose of the mock trial is to help students learn legal procedures and laws in our judicial system, as well as develop argumentation and public speaking skills, which are invaluable life skills to learn. Student teams are given a case packet that contains a fact situation, legal citations and case law, witness statements, evidence, and a pre-trial motion with positions for the prosecution and defense. The team’s job is to develop arguments using the facts with the appropriate law, in order to convince a real court judge to either convict or acquit the defendant.

This year, our team will be traveling to San Luis Obispo to compete in February. Check out the front page article in the January 26th edition of the Advocate newspaper about it!
