Lesson 2

Definition of Translations and Three Basic Properties

Learner Outcome: I can perform translations of a figure by sliding it along a specific vector.

Before we start talking about translations, we need to know what a vector is.

Recall Vector from Despicable Me.

As you watch the short clip to the right, notice how Vector describes the mathematical term. You may need to watch it a time or two since his humor can be distracting :)

Let's start translating!

To translate along a vector using the sketchpad, watch the short video below.

Now it's your turn! Select the image named Lesson 1-1 by clicking the folder icon in the bottom right corner. Translate shapes Q, S, U, and V by drawing a vector for each, and translating the shapes along the corresponding vector. When you're done, take a screenshot of your final images and submit using the google form at the bottom of the page.

Repeat the process with the image titled Lesson 1-2 in the sketchpad above. To choose this image, click on the folder in the bottom left corner and select the image. Again trace the image and translate along the designated vector. When completed, take a screenshot and submit in the google form below.
