The SAEBRS is a comprehensive screening tool designed to evaluate the social, academic, and emotional competencies of students in grades K–12. By analyzing these three specific areas, educators can identify behavioral risk levels and uncover the underlying causes of student struggles to better align targeted interventions. These cumulative scores are then used for progress monitoring within multi-tiered support systems to track a student’s development over time. Ultimately, this data-driven approach empowers school teams to create individualized support plans that address specific skill gaps.
Administration Process
Who Administers: General or special education classroom teachers serve as the informants. Ideally, the teacher should have known the student for at least six weeks and must have interacted extensively with them during the month immediately preceding the assessment.
Platform and Time: The survey is completed via a Google Sheet and takes approximately three to five minutes to finish for an individual student.
Behavioral Focus: When completing the survey, teachers should only consider behavior exhibited during the previous month. No behaviors outside of this 30-day window should influence the scoring.
Item Interpretation: To maintain standardized procedures, the tool does not provide specific definitions for behavioral items (e.g., "temper outburst"). Teachers are instructed to use their best judgment to interpret and apply the items.
Frequency: The surveys can be completed one to five times per year for any student in grades K–12. Within the Tomball ISD MTSS process, it is required for every student receiving Tier II supports and must be administered a second time if a student moves to Tier III to serve as a progress monitoring tool.
Scoring
The SAEBRS evaluates a student's social-emotional competencies through one broad scale and three specific subscales (see image below). The SAEBRS assessment uses specific cut scores to categorize students into three risk levels: High Risk, Some Risk, and Low Risk. These classifications are applied to each of the three behavioral subscales (subgroups) and the overall Total Behavior score These results help Teacher Teams and Student Intervention Teams (SIT) identify specific skill gaps and align relevant supports to a student's specific needs
