Contrary to the received view, medieval theology and philosophy produced some of the greatest minds and thinking in the history of Western and Middle Eastern thought.
In this unit we will look at Islamic and Christian theology and the sophisticated ways that theologians from either religion attempted to reflect upon the nature of their God using reason.
You will also soon see the debate between the two religions and how they defined God. This is reflected in the medieval painting above.
You will also look at criticisms from sceptical and materialist philosophers who attempt to critique both traditions.
Finally, you will examine counterarguments to these criticisms and you will determine overall to what degree the Islamic and Christian theological reflections on the nature of God are coherent and plausible.
