In Year 8 we focus on the Early Modern and Industrial eras.
In this period we study the greatest of the Tudor monarchs: Elizabeth I. It was under Elizabeth that the English slave trade first emerged so we next look at the origins of 'race' and how it was used by Europeans to justify territorial occupation; forced labour and the use of violence against non-white people.
Then we look at the Stuarts and their role in creating the democratic system we have today. We stay in Britain as we turn to the links between the Transatlantic slave trade and Kingston-upon-Thames through the life of Cesar Picton.
Then we return to the British Empire to look at resistance to colonisation and enslavement.
The course concludes with the event that marks the beginning of the Modern era: the Industrial Revolution.
