The first of the two units you will study in Year 12 is on the Wars of the Roses. This is the story of King Henry VI's failure to live up to the example of his illustrious father, Henry V. In the absence of strong government the House of York rose to challenge the king, finally toppling him in 1461. The Yorkists then lost the crown, won it back, before losing it once more to a young Lancastrian called Henry Tudor.
The most important event in modern history? The French Revolution is certainly strong contender for such a title. The overthrow of despotic King Louis XVI led to a 20 year war against the monarchies of Europe during which France swept all before her under the captaincy of the legendary Napoleon Bonaparte. However a combination of British naval power and a catastrophic invasion of Russia eventually brought about defeat for France and exile for Napoleon.
The History Extended Project is for students intending to read History at university. The task is to write an essay for Oxford University's Julia Wood Prize. Members of the History Department will act as advisers for each entrant.
