What will I do in this course?
This course focuses on Child Development from conception to the age of five. You will develop knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to pre-conception health, conception, pregnancy, birth and post-natal factors, diet and health in relation to young babies and children, stages and conditions of development and support available to the child and family.
How will I be assessed?
This course consists of 3 units.
Unit 1 Health and Well-Being for child development - this will be assessed throughout the course with a terminal exam in July 2024. The theory aspect is worth 40% of the final grade.
Unit 2 Create a safe environment and understand the nutritional needs of children from birth to five years - this will be assessed through a piece of coursework - set by the exam board and marked in school. A sample is then sent off for moderation. This will contribute to 30% of the overall grade.
Unit 3 Understand the development of a child from birth to five years - this will be assessed through a piece of coursework - set by the exam board and marked in school. A sample is then sent off for moderation. This will contribute to 30% of the overall grade.
Is there anything else I should consider and what are the career pathways?
You will need to know and be able to visit a child aged between 0-5 years for unit 3.
Careers for which Child development is useful include child nursing, nursery nursing, teaching, midwifery etc.

Is there an exam at the end of the course?
There is an exam at the end Year 11 which is worth 40% of your final grade.
Why should I take this option?
This is a really interesting, varied and useful course that teaches you about all of the factors that affect a child’s development from birth to 5 years old. It is taught by a team of very supportive and experienced teachers that will encourage you to do your best every step of the way. Many students like it as it is a mix of theory (exam) and coursework.
Do I need to know anything in particular before starting this course?
Not necessarily. However, you will need to know a child under the age of 5 years to help you with one of the coursework pieces.
Is there coursework?
Yes - there are 2 units of coursework that you need to complete. You complete one in Year 10 and one in Year 11 and they are sent off to the exam board to be moderated.
What sort of things will I do in class?
We try and keep it interesting, some lessons will be a mixture of group work, role plays and individual work, some will be based around a topic or finding research. Your work will be a mixture of written notes and work on your Chromebook.
What could this course lead to afterwards?
Once you have completed this course at the end of Year 11, you might decide to study Child Care at College, or you might decide to go onto 6th Form and study Health & Social Care or Psychology. If you do well enough, the points will help you with whatever you choose as a next step .
How long is the course?
It is a 2 Year course.
How will I be graded?
You will receive grades for your Assignments and for the Exam. Grades awarded will be either a Level 1 or Level 2 Pass, Merit , Distinction or Distinction* ( Level 2 only).
