What will I do in this Course?
This course has been designed to develop knowledge and understanding related to a range of hospitality and catering providers; how they operate and what they have to take into account to be successful. There is the opportunity to learn about issues related to nutrition and food safety and how they affect successful hospitality and catering operations. Students will also have the opportunity to develop some food preparation and cooking skills.
How will I be assessed?
This course consists of 2 units.
Unit 1 The Hospitality and Catering industry. This will be assessed through an examination at the end of Year 11. There will be short and extended questions based around applied situations.
Unit 2 Hospitality and Catering in Action. This will be assessed through internal assessment of a piece of coursework where the students will safely plan, prepare, cook and present 2 nutritional dishes. They will prepare a menu based upon research of a given topic, plan the preparation and cooking of dishes within the menu, cook the dishes demonstrating complex skills and then evaluate.
Is there anything else I should consider and what are the career pathways?
You must be prepared to bring ingredients into school for practical lessons. You will be expected to meet deadlines and develop independence. Careers for which Hospitality and Catering is useful include catering, chef, nutrition, dietetics etc.

Frequently Asked Questions: Hospitality & Catering/ Food
Is there an exam at the end of the course?
Yes. You will sit a one hour exam at the end of year 11. The exam will contribute 40% towards your final grade.
Is this the same as Food Technology?
This is a different course that focuses around learning all about the hospitality and catering industry. You will learn about how restaurants and hotels operate, as well as hygiene, health and safety of food preparation.
Is there coursework?
Yes, you will complete a piece of coursework in year 11. This will involve a 3 hour practical exam. This will contribute towards 60% of your final grade. You will need to produce detailed time plans to follow.
What sort of things will I do in class?
Lessons will consist of theory and practical work. There will be lots of written work in books and planning for practical lessons as well as practical lessons at least once a fortnight, so you need to be organised.
Do I need to know anything in particular before doing the course?
You do not need to know anything in particular but regular cooking at home would be helpful.
Are there any visits to establishments outside school relevant to this course?
Yes, we try to do a visit to a local hotel and we also welcome outside speakers into school to talk to you about their job roles within the hospitality and catering industry.
Will this prepare me well if I want to pursue a career in food?
Yes. This is a level 1/2 qualification. It prepares students well for the next level qualification offered at local colleges.
Do I need to be a good cook to do this course?
Not necessarily. It would be helpful if you have had some experience in the kitchen but ultimately if you have a passion for cooking that is wonderful!
Will I need a chef’s jacket for this course?
You don’t have to but you can if you like. You will need your own apron.
Do I need to provide my own ingredients for this course?
Yes. We would expect you to provide ingredients at least once a fortnight.
Is there a practical exam? If so, how long is the exam? How many dishes do I need to cook?
Yes there is. It is part of your coursework where you will be required to make 2-3 dishes in 3 hours. This will be done independently in examination conditions in one of the Food rooms.
